Starting point
Following the merger of DSM and Firmenich, the challenge was to bring two large digital ecosystems together into one clear and scalable experience.
The platform needed to support a new global brand while helping users navigate a complex portfolio of products, services, and business units.
Approach
The work focused on bringing clarity and structure to a large and evolving digital landscape without losing the character of the new brand.
I helped shape the shared vision for the enterprise design system, aligning brand, product, and system thinking around a clear MVP and long-term direction. Alongside the design system work, I contributed to the information structure and experience direction of the new dsm-firmenich.com platform.
The approach centered around simplification. Reducing visual, technical, and organizational complexity helped create a system that was easier to understand, implement, and evolve over time.
Design system
The design system was treated as a product rather than a static library. The goal was not only to create consistency across interfaces, but also to support collaboration, implementation, scalability, and long-term adoption across the organization.
A strong focus was placed on usability and documentation from the start. The system was supported by a centralized design system space with clear guidance, specifications, and implementation examples, helping teams understand how and when to use the system effectively.
To reduce visual complexity, the brand colors were organized into curated themes rather than being used freely across interfaces. Each screen focused on a single color and its tonal range, creating a calmer and more coherent experience while still allowing the identity to remain expressive and recognizable.
Outcome
The MVP established the foundations of the enterprise design system, including core components, selected page sections, and scalable templates designed to support rollout across products and platforms.
The system created a shared foundation for designers and developers, making implementation and collaboration more consistent across teams. Reusable building blocks and templates helped simplify page creation while supporting flexibility where needed.
The design system was intentionally built to evolve over time through ongoing feedback, adoption, and iteration, helping ensure it remained relevant as the organization and digital landscape continued to grow.
